April 6, 2010: MRSA Found in 4% of Healthcare Workers; Most Are Healthcare-Related Strains
A screening of 3,638 healthcare workers found that 4.3% tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as reported in an April 6, 2010, Medscape Medical News article. Researchers from East Carolina University (Greenville, North Carolina) found that, among healthcare workers directly involved in patient care, 4.6% tested positive for MRSA, while 4.2% of nonclinical staff tested positive. Three-quarters of healthcare workers directly involved in patient care who tested positive for MRSA were carriers of a healthcare-related MRSA strain, compared to 54% of nonclinical staff. Nasal use of the antibiotic mupirocin eliminated MRSA in 75% of carriers for at least three months; the remaining 25% had carriage detected again within three months. Mupirocin-susceptibility testing showed that 9% of initial isolates had a high amount of resistance, while 10% had a low amount of resistance. Resistance among healthcare workers previously treated with mupirocin was found in 2.6% of workers. The study’s principal investigator found the very low percentage of healthcare workers carrying MRSA encouraging. The data was presented at the Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections 2010, held March 18 to 22 in Atlanta, Georgia.
