Sheriff Kevin Beary has served in the law enforcement and security fields for the past 34 years. He has been an innovator in Community Policing, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, and Violent Crime Strategies. In 2003, The National Sheriff’s Association selected Sheriff Beary as the “National Sheriff of the Year”. Sheriff Beary rose through the ranks as a Police Officer, Detective, Deputy Sheriff, and a Crime Scene Technician. He was elected Sheriff of Orange County, Florida in 1992 and served four terms through January, 2009.
He lead one of the largest and most professional law enforcement operations in the country. He managed the Florida Sheriff’s Association (FSA) Task Force which responded to several wildfires and hurricanes within the State of Florida.
Sheriff Beary lead the FSA Task Force as it successfully managed the recovery of the Waveland, Mississippi, region after Hurricane Katrina. The Federal Communications Commission selected him as a member to the “Post Katrina Review Committee”. Under former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Sheriff Beary was selected to co-lead the Region 5 Domestic Security Task Force after the 911 attacks on the United States. He successfully maneuvered several state and federal grants to protect the Central Florida Region. He was commended for his private-public partnerships in the intelligence area and was instrumental in the Central Florida Fusion Center becoming a reality. He is a leading advocate of crime prevention and children’s programs and took a strong stance on fighting violent crime.
Sheriff Beary served as President of the Florida Sheriff’s Association and the Major County Sheriff’s Association. Sheriff Beary is a past member of the FBI Director’s Advisory Board on Homeland Security. He is a graduate of the FBI Academy 143rd Session, the FBI Leadership in Counter-Terrorism Program 2nd Session, the FBI National Executive Institute 18th Session, and the Police Executive Research Forum. Sheriff Beary received his Bachelor’s degree from Liberty University and Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida. After retiring as Sheriff from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Beary served in Afghanistan in 2009 where he mentored the Afghan National Police Counter-Terrorism General Officer and the Counter-Terrorism Police Task Force 24. Sheriff Beary will always be remembered in Central Florida for his effective management of the three hurricanes (Charlie, Francis, Jeanne) that came through Central Florida in 2004. His proactive leadership in “working the streets” with his deputies will be missed throughout Central Florida.
